So seeing Godard's Made in U.S.A. with Lauren the other night reminded me of something-- I really want to write a film in the style of the French New Wave. Yes, maybe Columbia's Asshole Syndrome has finally taken effect, but the new wave is by far my most favorite movement (suck on that, Italian Neo-realism)and it just seems like it would be so much fun to try.
Of course there would have to be conversations about love between the protagonist and random strangers they meet on the street that really don't have much to do with the main plot (first eight minutes of Shoot the Piano Player anyone?). But that's what was so great about new wave films. The plot was almost never important, it was about the message the movie was sending. Almost every movie released now is so focused on getting through the story that completely forget about the characters or the theme. That's why Public Enemies sucked so much, but now I'm just stating the obvious. Godard cared so little about the details of the plot that he had characters stare at the audience and describe plot points quickly and move on to the good stuff.
The New Wave was also great because many of the films would follow extremely flawed, and sometimes annoying, characters. Many of the protags in Rohmer's films are complete douchebags, but now people (*cough* columbia teachers *cough*) think that a character with some unlikeable qualities won't be loved by audiences and you'll lose them. I'm sorry, how is hard to relate to someone who has flaws?
Oh and it would have to be shot hand held with only the use of natural light, but I'm getting a little ahead of myself.
And now, the Japandroids, filling all of our rebellious love song needs.

Conflict Mallet
Well Matt and I finished up the scripts for the first four 10-12 min episodes of This is Conflict Mallet. If you don't know what it is, which if you're actually reading this you probably already do, it's a mockumentary about a team that plays a Warhammer-like game called Conflict Mallet.
Three friends (Steve, Jared, and Dennis) are forced to look for a fourth member after losing their two previous teammates. The first, Teddy Bitchell, joined another team and beat them in the last Conflict Mallet championship. The second, Kyle, was mauled by a pack of zebras. After struggling to find anyone to replace Kyle, a girl named Valerie appears and joins the team, and shakes things up a bit.
We're about to start casting, but besides Jeff playing Teddy Bitchell nothing is really set in stone. I don't know where we're gonna find someone to play Dennis, the weirdest character of the bunch but probably one of the funniest. Valerie is another one where I just have no idea what we're gonna do.
Right now the funniest scene I think is in episode 3 that involves the group watching pornography together. Probably not a good sign, but I think it's a really funny scene.
This is the song that I want to play at the end of every episode going into the credits a la Extras. Hopefully I can get the rights to it.
The Tallest Man on Earth - Pistol Dreams
The Video is the short I made for Production II that this is based on. I think it's kinda funny. I really like it because I weigh like thirty pounds less now than I did then. So at least it makes me feel better.

Vampires and Shit
Yeah I have a blog! I'm so important! So I finally gave in, but we'll see if I'm able to keep up with it or not. I'll try to keep it entertaining.
So while watching Let the Right One In (fantastic movie by the way) the other night, Matt and I decided that if we ever room somewhere together we're definitely gonna do our best to make the neighborhood kids think we're vampires. As soon as we move in, we'll start putting cardboard up on the windows and shit. We'll also have to be wearing fake vampire teeth in case any of the kids are outside. Then, if they're alone, flash the ol' vamp teeth and keep walking.
Of course doing anything outside the apartment would be difficult, but there is a solution for that. One, you obviously just need to be careful there's no one outside first. However, if there is, then we'll just block the sun from our faces and scream like "oh it burns!" or something to that effect, and then run back inside.
Every once and a while we'll probably take the cardboard down to make things more interesting. Maybe bring a friend over and if we think someone's watching spray some ketchup on the windows. Of course the friend will have to spend the night to make it look like they were turned... Yeah we pretty much have this whole thing figured out. It's gonna be a lot of fun to be a kid living next door to us, lemme tell ya.
I'm gonna try to throw in a few songs at the end of every blog, usually pertaining to the topic. But because I'm too lazy right now, and I'm short on vampire music, I'm just gonna post a few songs I've been listening to a lot lately.
Cymbals Eat Guitars - And the Hazy Sea
M83 - Graveyard Girl
NewVillager - Rich Doors
Bat for Lashes - Glass
